WTBU Remains on the Cutting Edge of Media

The WTBU radio station successfully opened their new studio and began the process of podcast production. This production keeps the station at the forefront of “evolving media,” a dedication to which is evident in its history.

WTBU Audio Productions Director Hannah Xue cited the rising popularity of podcasts for entertainment and spreading of information as inspiration for the radio organization’s decision to capitalize on the opportunity provided by the new studio. The close relationship between the production processes for radio content and podcasts, as well as interest from existing DJs, further convinced the station that podcasts would be a solid addition to the material already being aired or publicized by the organization.

Earlier this semester, the elected board of the volunteer, student-run station placed a large emphasis on creating podcast content and getting people involved in doing so.

“Podcasts are a priority because they're portable stories,” Xue said. “Being able to create content that people can listen to anytime, anywhere is very appealing to us. Podcasts will add a diversity of programming to WTBU from voices we wouldn't otherwise have heard from.”

The podcasts produced will be added to the existing content on the station’s website, in conjunction with their continuing, live content that airs 20 hours a day.

“[Podcasts] can be as similar or as different to on-air content as the hosts want. Not every host is required to be a WTBU DJ so they may be producing content that isn't on-air at all,” Xue said, further highlighting the station’s desire for new voices from across campus. “Topics [of programs already in production] range from arts and culture to politics and government.”

The early stages of production are very promising according to Xue, and the station is excited for these podcasts to become public. For further information, please explore the ‘Contact Us’ section of the station’s website, wtburadio.org.
